The California Compassionate Use Act, or Proposition 215, took effect in November of 1996.
The law made it legal for patients and their designated primary caregivers to possess and cultivate marijuana for personal medical use if recommended or approved by a California-licensed physician. Dr. Barke is credentialed to provide this authorization.
A wide variety of chronic and persistent medical symptoms that limit your life activities qualify you for a medical marijuana license. These include, but are not limited to:
Talk to Dr. Barke about your disabling health issues during your medical marijuana evaluation to determine if you’re a candidate.
The evaluation costs $45 for returning patients and $50 for new patients. You’ll need a valid California ID or driver’s license and your medical records if you can bring them, although they’re not required.
According to the medical board of California, Dr. Barke must perform a thorough medical history and physical with each patient. If you don’t qualify, the fee is waived. You must be 18 or older to undergo a medical marijuana evaluation.
If Dr. Barke determines you’d benefit from medical marijuana, he writes a letter of recommendation stating that you have a serious medical condition and use of the drug is appropriate. You present this letter to dispensaries to purchase marijuana or post it next to your plants if you grow it.
You can purchase a photo ID card stating your eligibility to use marijuana, too. These are optional but helpful and convenient.
Some people prefer not to smoke marijuana. If you’d prefer edibles, pills, tincture sprays, creams, or oils, the approval qualifies you to purchase and use these products as well.
